BUPA’s cakes raise £380

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

BUPA cakeI had a great day at BUPA in Harlow last week. Really lovely people with amazing fundraising cakes made for Gutless Kayaking, especially this one that Jules made. The staff raised £380 for us at this event – which BUPA will double with their community connections fund matching policy. I was also lucky enough to be shown around the compounding facility – a hyper sterile environment, a bit like something out of a James Bond movie.

Bupa Home Healthcare, Justin’s home healthcare provider, is supporting the Gutless Kayaking Challenge by holding their own fundraising day on Thursday 19th August. Bupa employees will be selling cakes and entering a ‘guess how many sweets are in the TPN bag’ competition to help raise some more cash.

Justin receives regular deliveries from Bupa Home Healthcare with his life-saving parenteral nutrition and ancillary supplies.  Whilst Justin is completing his kayaking challenge, Bupa will make sure he has everything he needs to connect to his feed bags on a daily basis.

If you’re out and about on the canals or tow path at about 8.30 in the morning and see a man struggling with a number of large blue boxes then you have probably witnessed Bupa delivering Justin’s feed to our hospital ship, Merlot.

CME Medical manufacture the electric pump used by Justin to regulate his intravenous nutrition. If this doesn’t work then Justin doesn’t get fed. Justin is attached to his life support system whilst kayaking. This means that if, please no, Justin ends up in the water accidently, we need to ensure all the medical kit stays dry. The ruck sack Justin wears that contains the whole life support system is waterproof as far as rain is concerned, but not for submersion. So, CME Medical are looking into using nano coating technology on Justin’s pump to make it fully waterproof.

CME Medical is the fastest growing specialist infusion company in the UK, providing products for medical specialties including pain management, palliative care, oncology, nutrition and other clinical applications. For more information, visit or call 01253 894646.
